Is Spring sputtering to life, its heart filled with plans of green ground, blue sky and warm air?
In my spot on the world map, I believe the answer to this question is no.
In southern New England, where I dwell, it is far too early for true springtime. However, for many days March has been behaving like May. The air wafting by occasionally carries the scent of springtime foliage waking up from winter. People chatter with excitement about outdoor possibilities. Winter clothes find themselves flung to the floor of the closet.
I feel like I’m being teased.
Just because when I look out my window I see green, not white, just because I’ve been able to ride my bike three times this week, just because right this minute inside my home I am not cold but hot, just because I woke up this morning for the first time in months to birds singing…
…doesn’t mean tomorrow isn’t going to turn inside out, that the blue sky isn’t going to become deep gray, that fat flakes of white aren’t going to start dropping out of frigid puffs of clouds.
It is, after all, only the third month of the year. A capricious month this is, and where it will take us no one ever knows. Next week at this time I could be strolling the beach barefoot, warm sunlight beaming down on me. Or, I could be sliding backwards in my car down a steep and icy hill, screaming blood murder during a snowstorm. I don’t know.
I would like March to travel away soon, this fickle month that taunts us with hints of spring. Stuck in the middle of it now, though, I’ll happily settle for a genuine springtime, not just a hint of what later will arrive.
How about in your spot of the world? Do you believe it’s truly springtime yet? Is the air warming just a tad? Or are you still bundled up and dodging snowballs? Let me know!

Sabina,
Nailed it again. The weather, expcpt for the snowballs part, is exactly as you described it, right here, right now on my tropical island.
We had 3 days of glorious sunshine. The wife packed away all the winter clothes. Then, the coldest day of the year hit us.
Stay flexible. Global warming can’t come soon enough, for me!
Cheers,
Mike

I know, Mike. It seems like we’re experiencing global cooling, to me.

I thought spring had arrived to Denver, but sadly flakes of snow are coming down at the moment. My Dad always says we have a green Christmas and a white Easter.

And after a week of bike riding, it’s been pouring down rain all weekend. I’d kind of rather it snow at this point.

Omg we had such an unreal day here today. It was so beautiful I had to drag my hungover butt out of bed to go for a two hour hike to Signal Hill. My roommate and I sat on the wall looking out to the Atlantic Ocean and everything was blue and perfect and warm, and then we ate ice-cream. I feel like an extremely harsh winter is worth it for moments like those.

California has been experiencing crazy weather forecasts…at least where I live. There are days when its lovely and warm outside then the next day it’ll rain, sometimes even days. Oh spring! Too much rain isn’t fun anymore especially if you had to cancel something you had planned out.

No, too much is no good. I love the melancholy feeling that rain brings. But I don’t want to feel melancholy three days in a row!

Hi, Jim – thank you very much!

After a very cold, snowy winter here in north-western Europe, it seems that spring is coming. People have started working in their gardens again and the birds are looking for materials to line their nests. Always a good sign.

Wonderful article, Sabina! Reminded me of Emerson’s quote: “Earth laughs in flowers.”
Keep up the great job!
