Playing the Oud at the Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa

While staying at the Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa last month, I happily spent a few evenings in its sedately beautiful Sunset Lounge, enjoying caipirinhas and the hilarious company of my hosts, Christoph and Mohamed. These attractions weren’t all that made the lounge a favorite spot of mine, though.

Each night I noticed a lone local man sitting on a chair at the bar, strumming an oval-shaped instrument which resonated with a beautifully exotic melody. I’m not ordinarily into musical entertainment, but this Middle Eastern sound captured my attention. Who was this man and what was this instrument?

Ahmed Abdou Abdullah playing the Oud at the Hilton Luxor Resort and Spa

His name is Ahmed Abdou Abdullah, and he was playing the oud. I have never heard this instrument played live in my life. Ahmed, a 32-year-old music teacher, can’t get enough of his field, and when he’s done teaching each day plays in the Sunset Lounge from about 6:00 to 10:00 each night. “I like music too much. I love music,” he said. I liked his music, too, but unfortunately I don’t think anybody liked looking at me when he let me hold his oud and strummed it. ;)

Me and the Oud at the Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa

The Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa gave me a complimentary stay at their hotel, a complimentary spa treatment and tour of Karnak Temple, but all opinions are honestly my own.
