Harbors of the World

When I travel I like to spend a lot of time around the ocean. Be the waters crystal clear with a hint of turqouise, as in the Grand Caymans, or nearly black as in my home state of Connecticut, I just love the atmosphere. More than the wide open ocean, though, I love the look of boats in harbors. Waiting to taking people out into the wilds of the water, they’re the only connection between land and sea.

I’ve decided, for the first time, to participate in this week’s Twitter’s #FriFotos, with the theme of harbors. I love every harbor I ever see, but here’s my top three.

1. Harbor Furthest From Home: The harbor I’ve visited furthest from my home was in Sydney, Australia – 14 time zones east of where I live. In this city Darling Harbour is quite beautiful, jammed with docked boats, with city buildings rising out of background.

2. Most Unusual Harbor – Far and away, the most unusual harbor I’ve seen or probably ever will see was in Mirbat, Oman in 2009. I just happened to arrive when dozens of men were hauling hundreds of dead sharks off just-arrived boats and lining them up on the pavement.

3. My Favorite Harbor - Martha’s Vineyard, my favorite island on earth, has also got some of my favorite harbors on earth. The most picturesque, though, in my opinion, is in the small town of Vineyard Haven. I love this place!

  1. The one in Oman does sound like the most unusual! And I hear the Sydney Harbor is very beautiful. I usually think more about the mountains when I travel than about the sea, yet I also spent time looking at boats at the harbor in Ushuaia, Argentina. Those boats were to leave to Antarctica within a few months :) I would have loved to be on one of them….. Maybe one day :)

Sydney has the best harbour in the world! Nothing better than getting a ferry after work to Manly and having a coldie off the boat!!!

Lovely harbour collection of the world. I am also surprised by the Mirbat harbor of Oman. What are these dead sharks about, will they be eaten?

Couldn’t agree more! There’s nothing better than get on a ferry in Sydney Harbour after a long day. I love the Manly ferry, but also try the other ones like the ferry to Parramatta. Briliant!
